Spinal nerves diagram is generally referring to the mixed spinal nerve. This is formed of the ventral and dorsal roots. The human nervous system contains all 31 parts of spinal nerves. Inside the spinal cord we can find the white matter that surrounds the gray matter. From the gray matter emerge 4 roots ( two ventral and two dorsal ) for each vertebra of the spine. Each dorsal root has a sensory axon. The roots are spread outwards forming a dorsal ganglion. The front roots have motor axons. They are similar with the back roots and they mix with the dorsal nerve root after a ganglion.

Importance of the spinal nerves

The muscles that one particular spinal root supplies are that nerve's myotome. Dermatomes are the areas of sensory innervation on the skin for each spinal nerve. This is important for diagnosis of neurological disorders, as lesions of nerve roots result in typical patterns of neurological defects that allow localization of the causing lesion.
